Whitford and Hughes.
This exhibition of Modern British paintings aims to convey a spectrum of the rich and diverse artistic achievements centering on the turn of the century. It illustrates the progression of the 'Modernist' path from the Academy dominated years to the Newlyn and St. Ives group and later the Camden and Bloomsbury circles. While some of the works display the continuing appeal of the traditional and academic styles, other reflect an open attitude and gradual adoption of new Continental influences, ranging from the French Impressionism of Steer to the tubular, Leger influenced style of Roberts.
