The present work is a seminal example of Mildred Bendall's admiration for her teacher Henri Matisse. Just like her master, she flattens the three dimensional planes so that the perspective is solidly modern. Bendall builds up the volume with colour and in this case her use of different hues of red against one another makes for an inviting composition.
