Clive Barker burst onto the Swinging London Pop Art scene in 1966, with a one-man show at the legendary Robert ‘Groovy Bob’ Fraser Gallery. Where one of his Pop Art colleagues, Claes Oldenburg, reinvented sculpture by taking hard manufactured objects and rendering them soft, Barker has often turned pliable objects into inflexible metal objects.
With the present sculpture Barker takes us into the world of Lewis Carroll’s Alice adventures and particularly to the celebrated illustrations of John Tenniel.
The Mad Hatter appears at a tea party, where he is occasionally rude to Alice, and was restyled in 1948 as the supervillain adversary of Batman.
