Gaimari graduated from the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires in 1933. Gaimari rebelled against his teachers' traditional views of sculpture, instead taking inspiration from non-Western works he saw in museums. He carved directly from the materials, evolving his signature abstract forms derived from the human body. Gaimari received many commissions for public statues, including the Monument to the Unknown Soldier located at the War Ministry of Argentina. However, his chosen subjects were of a more intimate nature including motherhood, reclining figures and embracing lovers. With great understanding of stone and wood alike, Gaimari incorporated the grain and natural shape of the material in the finished sculpture.
