At the end of his life, Caziel painted a series of geometrical, hard-edged abstract shapes against a white background. Caziel’s search for the fourth dimension had started in 1951, when he moved away from the influence of his close friend Pablo Picasso and began to experiment with the ideas of Kandinsky and Miró of transcending the second and third dimension. By doing so he refused Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler’s offer of representation and the fame it would ensue.
These late works show the artist’s self-awareness and willingness to lay himself bare in his paintings, so that they become the embodiment of his thought, emotion and self. These works reverberate light, space and rhythm, which create a sensation similar to emotions engendered by music. The consciousness of the creative journey and the arrival at the final aesthetic essence of his chosen forms were key to Caziel's development.
MUSEUMS: Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris, Vatican Museum, Rome; National Museum, Warsaw; Lotdz Museum, Lodz.
Whitford Fine Art has been representing the Estate of Caziel since 1994.
